Cook County Property Tax Exemptions

If these 3 statements apply to you, read on to learn how you can get money back from Cook County.

✅ I occupied the property as my principal place of residence on or before January 1st of last year.

✅ I am liable for the payment of this property’s taxes.

✅ I own or have a legal, equitable, or leasehold interest in this property.

How to claim your credit:
You must have lived at your residence for the full year prior to claiming an exemption.
For example, if you bought a residential property in Cook County in 2022, your 2023 homeowners exemption form was due in April of 2023.

You should have received it in the mail. You can fill that out or file online here.

You can claim up to 5 past years!

If you have owned and lived at your residence since January 1st, 5 years ago, and have not claimed your tax exemption, you could get a $3,500 check from Cook County!

How to claim past credits:

If you bought earlier, and never filed, you need to file a certificate of error here.

A few things to consider:

• Even if you own multiple homes, you can only declare 1 primary residence.

• If you are renting out your property, you are not eligible.

• When you sell, it is your obligation to pay all the taxes due until closing.
The homeowners exemption can help reduce your tax liability and the amount you have to pay the buyer.
